If you're searching for something a little unique for your vacation experience, then The Shellbox cottage just might be the place for you. In 1966, Priscilla Murphy, Sanibel Island's first realtor, prominent figure for the island’s thoughtful development and the woman who named Periwinkle way, built this cottage. As it was updated over the years, care was given to retain the 'Old Florida" charm as was intended with her original design. Filtered light floods the space through the many windows that wrap around the cottage. The multi-level ceiling heights and cozy sleeping loft are accented by warm, wooden floors and white-painted shiplap walls. The main bedroom is bright with a comfortable king bed and a newly remodeled bathroom that is adjacent to the conveniently located laundry room. The open floor plan has two walls with sliding glass, pocket doors with curtains that can slide shut to create a second private bedroom that is furnished with a comfortable queen futon. Right off the kitchen, a twisting, staircase leads to a private sleeping loft that is appointed with twin trundle beds that can be connected to make another king bed if so desired (kids tend to think this is the coolest part of the cottage!).
The space feels warm and inviting , but it’s location is what makes it special! Across the street is the bike path that is a real gem to Sanibel. Twenty-four miles of path leads to all the beauty, site seeing and conveniences of the island. Hop on one of the bikes provided and strap on a beach chairs or just take a six minute stroll down this path to the beautiful beach where shelling enthusiasts can start their adventure. The Donax St. beach access is also near a couple of tiki bars should you need a cold beverage.
If you desire a bit of respite from the sand and sea, there is always the option of enjoying the lovely pool that is tucked in amongst the tropical landscape just steps from the screened- in back porch of the cottage. The tennis/pickle ball court that sits in the center of the complex is always a fun activity. Between the pool and the court are new gas grills and picnic tables that all guests can use.
If you enjoy cooking, the efficient kitchen is well-equipped with the tools needed to prepare your next meal. However, if you need a break from the daily cooking routine, Sanibel's many restaurants are close- by.
At the end of a sun-filled day we strongly suggest taking a soothing outdoor shower at the rear of the cottage under the starlit, Florida sky- perhaps accompanied by your favorite fruity drink!
